‘Okay, what are you two gossiping about over there?’ Priya called out, breaking through mine and Aiden’s conversation.

Aiden drew back from me, and I hoped my clearly heated face would be put down to the log fire and not him asking about my kiss with Jasper.

‘Just the rumour about the vice chancellor.’

‘I heard that,’ one of the other lecturers said. ‘Apparently, his wife has left him for her personal trainer.’

I hadn’t heard that so I leaned forward to hear what everyone had to say about the big boss. I wondered if Jasper knew but I doubted he indulged in university gossip.

‘Well, I hope this won’t put him off funding my project,’ Charles said with a sigh. He really did have the dullest voice. I wondered if any of his students stayed awake during his lectures. ‘I need him in a good mood next week to approve my proposal.’

‘Just don’t mention anything to do with fitness,’ Priya told him. I saw her holding back a grin.

‘Why would I?’ Charles asked, confused.

I snorted into my drink. Charles really didn’t have much of a sense of humour.

‘I spoke to Dan at lunch,’ I said to Aiden, careful not to lean in too close again and rouse the others’ interest in us. ‘He sounded much more like his usual self.’

Aiden nodded. ‘We messaged for a bit. I think he’s loving being looked after by your mum. He deserves it. I still can’t believe that bike hit him like that and drove off. He was so lucky.’

I shivered again. ‘I know. Thank God. I don’t know what I’d do without him. Thank you, by the way, for staying so calm. I think I might have freaked out a lot more if you hadn’t been with me.’

Aiden smiled. ‘You can always call me in a crisis.’

‘But we don’t speak on the phone,’ I said, remembering what I’d told my mum when Aiden was with me in the bookshop. My heart though gave a little jump at his offer.

‘We know each other well enough; you can call me about anything.’ He sounded serious. Then he leaned in again. ‘Especially if you need rescuing from another bad date.’

‘It wasn’t a bad date,’ I hissed back, never wanting to agree with anything he said.

‘Just a bad kiss.’ He grinned.

I shook my head. ‘It was nice.’

‘Ouch,’ Aiden replied. ‘Nice is not good feedback, Olivia. Do you really want nice kisses for the rest of your life?’

My eyes flicked to his lips. I was sure he noticed. I took a breath before I was able to speak. ‘No, I really don’t,’ I admitted. I leaned away from him, shocked at myself for being that honest. And flirty. Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw him watching me as he finished his beer.

Priya said she needed to get up early for a morning lecture, and the others started gathering their things and getting up. A suggestion was made to order Ubers and then we all left the pub together to climb into the waiting cars.
